I had so much fun with old Corey Hart and "I Wear My Sunglasses At Night" and the lyrics I always got wrong that I had to post my MOST FAVORITE "messed up lyrics" song out there. This was a song that I listened to incessantly with my sister Shannon as a child trying to figure out the lyrics. This was when the song was on a cassette tape. Our conversation usually went something like this:
click of the play button
boombox: "Poor old Johnny Ray, hewasthecenter of brado with hearts and whata know... out motherspants"
click of the stop button
"what was that?"
"did he say something about pants?
Sqqquuuuueeeeeaaaaaalllllllll (as the tape is rewound)
click of the play button
"manda, shut up"
boombox: "Poor old Johny Ray, hewasthecenterfold brad 0 with hearts and mothers pants.."
click of the stop button
"see he said something about a billfold and mother's pants"....
"I am pretty sure he said something about a radio"
"I told you they said something about pants and you shut up"
and it went on and on and on.... click, sqqqquuuueeeeeeeel, chatter, click, sqqquuuueeeeelll, chatter until the tape wore out.
You know this song well. We all skated to it at the skating rink, had it on cassette tape, danced to it in college at the bar, carried it around on a "mixed cd" in the visors of our cars and have it safely tucked away in itunes now so that we can relive the old memories.
Without any further ado I give you my favorite most commonly messed up song lyrics (mainly due to their heavy British accent and the lead singer's lisp):
Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners (who had a thing for overalls)
I WILL PUT MY LYRICS IN RED BELOW THE REAL ONES... enjoy.
Poor old Johnny Ray sounded sad upon the radio
Me: Poor old Johnny Ray, (he) was the centerfold of the radio
He moved a million hearts in mono
Me: with a million hearts that want to know
Our mothers cried,
Me: Our mother's pride
And sang along who'd blame them?
Me: Sad all along, who would blame them
You've grown, so grown up
Me: Your grown, silk roy-al (yeah I know)
Now I must say more than ever
Me: Now I must sit home and be clever
(Come on Eileen) Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye Aye
Me: (I actually got that part right)
And we can sing just like our fathers
Me: We sing this land like o' fathers
Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
Me: (I got this right)
At this moment, you mean everything
Me: (I got this right too!)
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Me: (got this right too!)
Verge on dirty
Me: Which are dirty
Ah come on Eileen
Me: (got this right)
These people round here, wear beaten down eyes
Me: These people round here, have been down with lice
Sunk in smoke dried faces, so resigned to what their fate is
Me: funky dried up face and do just what you tell them
But not us, no not us, we are far too young and clever
Me: But not her, oh no not her, we are far too young and clever.
(Remember) Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
Me: (i got this right)
Eileen I'll hum this tune forever
Me: (i got this right)
Come on Eileen, I swear, well he means
Me: (i got this right)
Ah come on let's, take off everything
Me: (I got this right)
Pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Me: You in that dress
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen
Me: (I got this right)
Pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Me: (I got this right)
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen, please
Me: (I got this right)
Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye
Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye
Me: (I got this right)
(Now you have grown, now you have shown, oh, Eileen)
Me: Now you have grown, now you have thrown up, Eileen
Said Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye (repeat in background)
Me: (got this right)
You've grown...So grown (Show, how you feel)
Me: You've grown, now you have shown
Now I must say more than ever
Me: (I got this right)
Things 'round here have changed
Me: Things round here have shown.
I said too-ra-loo-ra-too-ra-loo-rye-aye
Me: (got this right)
Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
Me: (got this right)
At this moment, you mean everything
Me: (got this right)
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Me: (I got this right)
Verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen
Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Well, they're dirty
I am laughing so hard I'm crying....
